NIKE DUNK VS AIR JORDAN 1: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?!

Both landed in '85. Both still sell out in minutes.

The Nike Dunk and Air Jordan 1 have been running this game for over 35 years — and the rivalry's heating up again.

If you're new to the sneaker world, we get it. At first glance, these two look like twins. But there's more to it than that. With the Dunk making a serious comeback, the debate's back in full force.

So what's the actual difference? We're breaking down everything — side by side.

SO, WHAT'S THE SAME?

The Air Jordan 1 and the Nike Dunk both dropped in 1985, with the AJ1 landing just months ahead of the Dunk. No coincidence they look similar — both were designed by Nike legend Peter Moore.

The '80s owned high-top basketball kicks, and both sneakers were built for the court. The AJ1 was the first signature shoe for the greatest ever, Michael Jordan. The Dunk? Aimed straight at college ballers.

The Dunk pulled inspiration from '80s b-ball silhouettes — the Terminator, the Legend, and the just-dropped AJ1. That's where the shared DNA comes from. Originally called the 'College Colour High', the first 12 colourways repped America's top basketball schools: Michigan, Iowa, Kentucky, Georgetown and more.

Both kicks also rock nine eyelets. The strapping might be different, but the count's the same — another nod to their shared roots.

HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?

Seen what connects them. Now here's where they split.

It starts up top. The Jordan 1 upper packs more panels — six versus the Dunk's four — plus extra stitching throughout. The Dunk, meanwhile, runs a bigger toe box in every direction.

Branding tells its own story. The Dunk keeps the OG '80s tongue with Nike branding stitched to a separate tab. The AJ1? That iconic Jumpman logo, embroidered direct to the tongue. And you can't miss the Wings logo stamped at the heel — the Dunk keeps it clean with Nike branding at the back instead.

Underfoot

This is where things really split. The Nike Dunk sits on a soft foam midsole — responsive cushioning every time you lace up.

But the clue's in the name with the Jordan. The Air Jordan 1 packs an Air-sole unit with encapsulated Air in the heel. Levelled-up comfort, plain and simple.

Clued up? Now you know the details, you're officially at sneakerhead status.
