PUMA was founded in Herzogenaurach in 1948. The company was first named as ‘RUDA’ but it was later changed to ‘PUMA’. The first major success for the brand was at the 1952 Olympics, when 1500-meter runner Josy Barthel, won PUMA's first Olympic gold in Helsinki.
